Jonathan Raban
Masguda Shamsutdinova, celebrated as an exceptionally talented and original composer in Russia and her native Tatarstan, is little known in the United States, her recently adopted home. Her music speaks powerfully for itself, and if you listen to her recordings, I'm sure you'll be struck, as I have been, by the arresting way in which they interpret traditional folk themes in her own passionate modernist style. She is at once startlingly innovative and instantly accessible--a rare and attractive combination.
